Almonds are technically the seeds of almond trees. They are closely related to cherries, plums and peaches.

These nuts have been grown for thousands of years in the Mediterranean region, but today the US is the world’s largest producer.

Almonds are a very good source of vitamin E, manganese, potassium, biotin, and copper, magnesium, molydenum, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and phosphorus. Over 70% of the fats within Almonds is of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.

Almonds are technically the seeds of almond trees. They are closely related to cherries, plums and peaches.

These nuts have been grown for thousands of years in the Mediterranean region, but today the US is the world’s largest producer.

Almonds are a very good source of vitamin E, manganese, potassium, biotin, and copper, magnesium, molydenum, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and phosphorus. Over 70% of the fats within Almonds is of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.

They may be eaten on their own, raw or toasted. They can also be made into almond flour, milk, syrup, butter and oil. Since they are gluten-free, almonds are often used in gluten free diets to replace wheat flour.

Health & Nutrition

Heart.  Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats and as a result have the effect of supporting heart health and reducing likely incidence of strokes. Several human studies have been done which all support lower risk of heart disease. The healty fats. Plant sterols and fibre all contribute towards reduced levels of LDL cholesterol.

Diabetes.  A secondary important link to health is the ability of Almonds to reduce spikes in blood sugar levels, thus supporting the use of nuts in diets for diabetics. In addition to supporting blood sugar, Almonds also contain high levels of anti-oxidants found primarily in the flavonoids and Vitamin composition of the nut.

This antioxidant supply is an important element in reducing oxidative damage of LCL cholesterol

Weight. Almonds are not to be feared when it comes to weight control. Their high levels of monounsaturated fats are more beneficial in a diet geared towards a higher consumption of calories from fats, rather than from carbohydrates. Several studies have been done concluding that the consumption of nuts on a weekly basis contribute to a healthy nutrient dense intake that reduces the incidence of obesity.

Performance. The high levels of manganese and copper in almonds contribute to the body’s active and efficient production of energy. In conjunction with these micro minerals, the healthy doses of Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) found in almonds, support the flow of energy around the body and its use within our various systems.
